Studio Yates is a collaboration between Robert and Elizabeth Yates. The studio offers two forms of paintings; copper and fiber.
Copper has been their primary medium for over 25 years. Inspired by nature, their work is an evolution of exploring copper and is created by heating copper with a torch, revealing those beautiful iridescent colors. Intrigued by the versatility of the material, they have spent those 25 years discovering multiple ways to color it using patinas and heat reduction techniques. The slight unpredictability and flow of the torch lends to their ethereal feeling. Due to the fleeting nature of achieving colors, they are still learning and perfecting. But they love the non-traditional way of making art this way.
Elizabeth's fiber work is an exploration of color combinations and textures, while the designs are also inspired by nature. Needle felting wool has become her obsession because the endless possibilities of color combinations and meditative process leaves her excited to create the next one.
